Early Morning Blaze Destroys a Garage
by Rescue Captain 68, Julius Marosfalvi Jr.
Tuesday, February 8, 2011

SCHUYLKILL TWP, PA - VFVFCo was dispatched at 06:13AM on Tuesday February 8, 2011, for a garage fire on Pawlings Road.  Also dispatched were Mutual aid support units that included one engine from Phoenixville Fire Dept. station 65 and the tower truck from Kimberton Fire Company station 61.

Valley Forge Fire Chief, Rick Beittel, was first to arrive on the scene and reported a two car detached garage fire, fully involved and established Pawlings Road Command.  Engine 68-2 arrived behind the chief and crews quickly pulled a 1 3/4 inch hose line along with a 3 inch attack line to begin dowsing the flames.  Engine 65 connected to the nearest fire hydrant and laid approximately 1,000 feet of 5 inch supply hose along Pawlings road to provide a water supply to the scene.  Firefighters from Engine 65 then pulled an additional 1 3/4 inch hose line to help with fire suppression.  Engine 68-1 and Rescue 68 arrived on the scene minutes later followed by Tower 61 and provided additional manpower to the scene.  Tanker 68 was on the scene to provide a backup water source just in case any water pressure issues occured with the hydrant.

Firefighters worked feverishly to extinguish the blaze.  The fire was knocked down in less than 15 minutes and the situation was place "Under Control" at 6:55AM.

Crews continued to spray water on the hot ashes and debris for nearly an hour to ensure all hot spots were extinguished.  Unfortunately the garage and all the contents were completely destroyed in the blaze.

Pawlings Road was closed between Route 23 and Ferry Lane due to the number of fire trucks on road and the amount of hose that was stretched from the hydrant to the scene.  The fire trucks began to clear the scene at 8 AM and the road was quickly re-opened.

No injuries were reported and all the firefighters returned to their stations safely.
