Fatal Fire in Phoenixville
December 11, 2009
by Firefighter Max Gitin

At approximately 2 AM on the morning of Friday, December 11th, 2009, Valley Forge Volunteer Fire Company and Kimberton Fire Company were dispatched to assist Phoenixville Borough for a working dwelling fire on Washington Ave.

First arriving Phoenixville units encountered extensive fire raging out through the windows of the first floor and heavy smoke conditions throughout the 3 story twin.  Phoenixville units established a water supply and conducted an aggressive fire attack from the front while Engine 68-2 from Valley Forge and Tower 61 from Kimberton proceeded to the alley behind the structure to support fire suppression operations from the back.  Engine 68-1 and Rescue 68 from Valley Forge along with other mutual aid units staged on Washington Ave. and provided additional manpower to support fire suppression operations.

As crews battled the blaze, search teams located one victim in the fire building who did not survive.  The fire was declared under control shortly after 3 AM.

The last units cleared the scene at approximately 8:30 AM.
