Potentially Disastrous Barn Fire Extinguished with Fire Extinguisher by Assistant Chief Evan Taylor
On evening of Monday, November 16, 2009, while firefighters were attending a Special Vehicle Rescue class at the station, Valley Forge Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched, along with one engine (station 65) and ambulance (MICU 67) from Phoenixville Fire Department, to a barn fire at the Valley Forge Freedom Foundation on Valley Park Rd. The address as dispatched placed the barn across the street from the VFVFCo main station on Valley Forge Rd. Chief and Assistant 68 responded in the area with nothing evident. After searching the area, the barn was found to be in the lower part of the Freedoms Foundation. Chief and Assistant 68 arrived to find the reported fire was extinguished thanks to the residents next door and a few fire extinguishers.
Within moments, Engine 68-5 arrived on the scene and accessed the basement level of the barn while Engine 65 and the crew from Rescue 68 accessed the barn from the upper end, 1st floor. Crews removed some wall paneling to access the hidden area where the fire had extended and soaked down the chard walls and timbers. After approximately one hour all crews were made available.
