4th of July Low Angle Rescue in Valley Forge Park
by Assistant Chief Evan Taylor
July 8,2008

On Friday July 4, 2008, just before getting ready to celebrate our country's birthday, Valley Forge Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched along with King of Prussia Fire Company for a Trench Rescue.  The first arriving crews had to hike several hundred feet in full turnout gear in get to the location of the incident.  Upon arrival units realized that it was not a trench but a rather steep hill down to a trail along the Schuylkill River.  A bicyclist had fallen while riding along the trail and apparently broke her ankle.   Trucks were repositioned once the correct location of the patient was found.  Lafayette Medics and fire crews assisted packaging the patient in a Stokes Basket while the remainder of the fire crews prepared a 4:1 mechanical advantage (pulleys and ropes) to haul the patient up the incline.  Once the patient was removed, she was transported to Phoenixville hospital.  A great job was done by two stellar fire companies working well together.
