On Monday, Feb 4, 2008, Valley Forge firefighters participated in roof ventilation training at the home of one of our fellow firefighters. Firefighter/Engineer Eamonn Creaney donated the use of the roof of his own home for this extremely valuable hands-on training session.
The firefighters used axes and specialized gas powered chain saws to cut numerous holes in the roof to practice vertical ventilation techniques. These ventilation techniques are used to reduce the smoke and intense heat that builds up inside a building. By reducing the heat and smoke inside, the firefighters can quickly search for victims and extinguish the fire.
While on the roof, firefighters utilized roof ladders for stability. A roof ladder provided a safe and stable platform for firefighters to work from, especially while on homes that have steep roofs such as this home.
Nothing beats the experience gained by hands-on training in a stable and safe environment. Special thanks again to Firefighter Creaney for allowing our crews to train on his home as he begins some major renovations and remodeling.
